Photography Office

Photography is an excellent medium to record and illustrate quickly and objectively the archaeological record. Archaeological photography can be broadly divided into two categories.

a) record photography of the actual excavations

Agora Excavations; March 21, 1933 West
Side - Nike Statue as Found

Agora Excavations - March 21, 1933
West Side - Nike Statue as Found (S 312)

b) object photography ("mug" shots of the objects, typically, top, bottom and profile views of the object)

object photography

Stored in our excavation photographic archives are several hundred thousand negatives and images that document our work. Traditionally archaeological photography has been shot with black and white film, but color photography and more recently digital imaging is increasingly being used.

Photographs and slides can be ordered for study , lecture and publication purposes by contacting us. For teaching purposes the Agora Excavations is pleased to offer a series of color slide sets. Objects on display in the Museum of the Stoa of Attalos or stored in its study collections have been selected to illustrate various aspects of Athenian culture and archaeology. Designed for classroom and archival use by schools, universities and museums, these slides make the archaeological artifacts from the Athenian Agora available to your students. Most of the sets are based thematically on specific Picture Books, which thus provide the students with an ideal commentary on the slides. Notes accompanying the slides provide bibliographical references to scholarly publications of each object: in the Picture Books, in the series The Athenian Agora, or in articles published in Hesperia.

Each set contains 20 or 30 color 35 mm slides reproduced from recent, detailed views of each object taken by the photographers on the Agora staff. The sets have been assembled and annotated by archaeologists on the Agora staff. They are intended to present materials which are well published in the series of the Agora Picture Books or the more scholarly volumes of The Athenian Agora.
